Transfer of Power

Yesterday, the world witnessed the inauguration of America’s 47th president. Depending on your political beliefs, that transfer of power may have caused you to feel worried and skeptical or more confident and hopeful. Either way, we all still have the freedom to enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As Christians, we understand and accept that only our Creator can grant these inalienable rights. The rights and privileges He grants are always for our good.

We can trust God’s offer of LIFE over death so we can enjoy living in His presence forever. We accept His authority, power, and leadership because He is the King of kings.

We can gratefully accept that Jesus offers us the LIBERTY to make mistakes and still be covered in His grace. In an instant, our faith can proclaim Him to be not only the Lord of lords but OUR Lord of lords.

We can access the power of the Holy Spirit to fuel our pursuit of humility, comfort, gentleness, mercy, purity, peace, and righteousness. This transfer from our power to His fosters an abundance of HAPPINESS. (Matthew 5:1-10) Still, it’s easy to resist the transition. We would much rather champion our own causes, pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps, and lobby for complete control.

Jesus said, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.†(Galatians 5:1a) While I love America immensely, America has not granted me true freedom. Our most enduring freedom comes from Jesus. You’ve no doubt heard that great freedom comes with great responsibility. Staying diligently and consistently connected to God, the One who has promised to preserve, protect, and defend us, calms our spirits when we lose our meager control, break our brittle bootstraps, and feel like chumps rather than champions. It’s in God we trust.

Oh, that there would come a day when all God’s children could walk hand in hand, spreading the message of freedom in Christ! Then, and only then, would we be seen as one family under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. Could that ever be possible? I’m learning that the impossible is what God does best!

Could we allow freedom to ring in our workplaces, neighborhoods, and friends’ ears? Could we ring freedom’s bell in our schools? Are we motivated enough by God’s love to let freedom ring in our families? Are we courageous enough to let freedom ring in our churches?

I have a dream that all God’s children will stop playing pretend and simply walk their talk.

I dream that one day, Jesus-believing Christians from every tribe and nation will loosen their grip on their traditions and walk hand in hand in love and respect.

But I have a bigger dream …

that the transfer of power begins with me.

“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. For, there is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus. He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone.†(1 Timothy 2:1-6a NLT)

Sing A New Song

By Donna Jackson | January 6, 2026 |

Ask any musician, sequence matters. If we could take all the notes from the song “Amazing Grace,” put them in a bag, shake them up, and pour them onto a blank sheet of paper, no one would recognize one of the most treasured hymns of all time. That sort of haphazard arrangement seems ridiculous. Yet…

Relient Forever

By Donna Jackson | December 23, 2025

Who knew those Christmas pencils we handed out to our fifth-graders could inspire so much! For the last three weeks, we’ve learned that to make a mark on the world effectively, wood and graphite must first undergo a process. Similarly, as we become surrendered pencils in God’s hand, He patiently crafts a delightful story. Achieving…

The Great Eraser

By Donna Jackson | December 16, 2025

Ten-year-olds hold a special place in my heart. I guess that’s why I enjoyed teaching fifth graders. My husband often teases that he’s married to a fifth-grader since my sense of humor refuses to grow up. I think he should just be glad I didn’t teach kindergarten. While I love elementary school kids, they have…

Pencils for Christmas: Perfectly Processed

By Donna Jackson | December 9, 2025

If you know me, you know that one of my favorite sayings is, “It’s a process!” Want to make a scrumptious cake, build a fine house, or just tie your shoe? It’s a process. Every process begins with a heartfelt desire for a specific outcome. Then, a methodical series of steps must be planned and…

Pencils for Christmas: Honorable Purpose

By Donna Jackson | December 2, 2025

As Christmastime approached, all of us fifth-grade teachers would order each student a pack of Christmas pencils with their names on them. The kids loved seeing their names on the pencils, and we loved knowing that everyone had one. Having their names on the pencils made it easy to return them to their rightful owner…

Love in Every Language

By Donna Jackson | November 25, 2025

Years ago, Gary Chapman introduced five simple yet powerful love languages: Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Gifts, Physical Touch, and Quality Time. Chapman believed that marriages, parent-child relationships, and friendships often experience disconnection, not because of a lack of love, but because the people involved do not speak the same love language. Many people…

What Women Need: Rest

By Donna Jackson | November 18, 2025

If you live in the South, you know the phrase “dog tired.” It describes how your body feels after a hard day of yard work, garage cleaning, or other activities that make you feel like you’ve run a marathon. Placing one foot in front of the other requires substantial effort. Muscles ache and backs break.…

What Women Need: Strength

By Donna Jackson | November 11, 2025

I often stand in the condiment aisle at Publix, wondering if I have ketchup. I don’t know why it’s always ketchup that slips my mind. I stand there asking myself, “If I still have some, is it enough? Did the grandkids ‘borrow’ the unopened bottle? Did I use up all that I had?” Since I…

What Women Need: Sisters

By Donna Jackson | November 6, 2025

One of my earliest close friends was also named Donna. My family had just moved to Birmingham, and she helped me feel welcomed at my new elementary school. Sharing the same name immediately gave us something in common. We were excited to find out that we also attended the same church. Our parents became friends,…

What Women Need: Food

By Donna Jackson | October 28, 2025

(This is part 2 of “What Women Need.” If you’d like to read Part 1, “Roots”, go to https://leanintojesus.com/what-women-need-roots/.) WHAT WOMEN NEED: FOOD Does sugar tempt you? The Bible doesn’t say this, but surely the fruit Eve ate in the garden was coated in sugar—maybe the white, powdered kind! What else could have made that…
