Travel On!

Mark Keathley’s painting “Mountain Glory†overlooks our living room. Occasionally, I take a deep breath, sit back, and step into that painting to stare at the scene before me. Clusters of perky purple flowers stand at attention beneath my feet. Stacks of cold, gray rocks poke their heads up through the greenness all around me. Not far away, a mother bear lumbers down the mountain slope toward her three cubs, who seem to be just as enchanted by God’s artistry as I am. Half the billowing clouds nestle courteously below distant mountaintops, clearing my view of the higher ones splitting the morning sunshine into golden rays.  Every time I still myself here, without fail, the words of Psalm 121 drift into my thoughts: “I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.†(Psalm 121:1)

Psalm 121 is the second of a group of psalms known as the Songs of Ascent. These songs were sung by Israelites making their way to Jerusalem for three yearly festivals. As they journeyed along, they kept their eyes on the holy city. They were confident God’s watchful eye would never leave them. Even the brilliance of the sun’s rays would not scorch them, and the darkness of the night would not overtake them.

 We can have that same confidence as we journey toward our heavenly city. Like the mother bear in Keathley’s painting, the same God of the Israelite pilgrims watches over us. Cold, gray rocks of conflict, temptation, pride, or bitterness may poke their heads up in our peaceful valleys, but the Spirit empowers us to walk securely. God’s loving hand whisks the clouds of worry and doubt out of our way so we can bask in the warmth of the Son’s grace. Our job is to keep watching, keep trusting, and keep moving. I like how Spurgeon said, “Our feet shall move in progress, but they shall not be moved to their overthrow.†Thank you, God!

You have a lot on your plate today. Remember, your help comes from the One who made heaven and earth! Take a deep breath, sit back for just a moment, and step into Psalm 121:

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber;
 indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.â€

(Psalm 121 NIV)

Travel on, weary pilgrim. The city is getting closer and closer!

Remembering the Good Ol’ Days

By Donna Jackson | May 26, 2026 |

Do you remember the day you were set free from the penalty and power of sin? For me, it was the weekend of June 13, 1971. Richard Nixon was president, the final Ed Sullivan Show had just aired, and Carole King’s “It’s Too Late/I Feel the Earth Move” was about to hit #1 on the…

Sweet, Sweet Music

“When the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or…

A Goldilocks Life With Doubts and Questions

By Donna Jackson | May 12, 2026

Last Tuesday was a Goldilocks day at Orange Beach. Not too hot, not too cold. It was just right! As the sun began to sink, Ron and I gathered our belongings because dinner was on our radar. After getting all gussied up, we made our way to the car when, suddenly, what looked like a…

Something New – Home

By Donna Jackson | April 28, 2026

Traveling brings a broad smile to my husband’s face. I’ve always been more of a homebody, but his enthusiasm for a new adventure is highly contagious. Months of anticipation and planning culminate in exploring new and exciting territory and taking in wondrous sights. Over the next six months, we will traverse dry deserts and deep canyons,…

Something New: Worship

By Donna Jackson | April 21, 2026

Is your Sunday morning worship more powerful, more passionate, and more personal than it once was?  Several years ago, Matt Redmond released a song titled “The Heart of Worship.” He expressed a repentant heart when he sang, “I’m sorry, Lord, for the thing I’ve made it when it’s all about you, Jesus. It’s all about…

Something New: Friendship

By Donna Jackson | April 14, 2026

“Who has ever had a messy friendship?” That was the question I posed to a group of junior and senior high girls this past Sunday. Every young girl (and some older folks, too) shot their hands into the air. It’s impossible to walk through life without rubbing someone the wrong way, isn’t it? Each of…

Something New

By Donna Jackson | April 7, 2026

Ever felt like Peter? He wanted a redo. He needed a clean heart, a second chance, a fresh start. How could he have abandoned Jesus, the man who meant everything to him, just when He needed him most? Feelings of fear, shame, failure, and unworthiness swallowed him like a Floridian sinkhole. We may feel that…

A Prayer of Surrender

By Donna Jackson | March 24, 2026

Jesus modeled everything for us. How to live. How to love. How to give. How to pray. Though He was sinless and God in human form, He even showed us how to step into saving faith and a right relationship with God through complete surrender. What would you consider Jesus’ greatest example of faith? You…

Let the Good Times Roll

By Donna Jackson | March 17, 2026

Before cars became rolling computers, a new owner could simply slide into the driver’s seat, turn the key, put it in gear, and scoot down the road in seconds. Today, sitting in the driver’s seat of a new vehicle for the first time can feel intimidating. There are seat adjustments to personalize, control buttons to…
