The Song We All Need to Hear

Nestled snugly beneath the warm covers during this winter storm, a flurry of school memories whirled through my mind. I remembered on such days peeling back the covers just enough to slide my hand toward the bedside radio. I had tuned it to WTWX the night before, in case the roads were too icy and the temperatures too cold for bus drivers to safely complete their routes. As soon as my finger pushed the power button, I could count on hearing the iconic voice of the announcer Bruce Underwood. In a voice like none other, I longed to hear him say, “Marshall County schools are closed!” When he finally came through, I would smile and pull the covers back around my ears. Like all students, snow days filled me with inexpressible joy. But I was the teacher, and we all loved snow days more than the kids did!

Yesterday morning, as my cursor kept blinking, my coffee cup’s curling steam doubled over in laughter while I pondered how to wrap up this series on “Singing A New Song.” Eventually, one of my favorite songs drifted into my thoughts. It was written by Chris Tomlin and sung by Audrey Asaad. I wonder if Chris wrote it on a snow day. Surely, he did.

Chris not only captured the wonder of “Winter Snow,” but also the soft, quiet way Jesus came to earth. He didn’t “come like a mighty storm with all the strength of a hurricane.” He “could have come like a forest fire with the power of heaven in His flame.” Instead, He “came like a winter snow, quiet, soft, and slow; falling from the sky in the night to the earth below.”

Jesus is still the same. He doesn’t force His way into our lives “like a tidal wave.” He doesn’t “come through like a roaring flood.” He simply wants to be believed. He wants us to believe that He is who He says He is, that He can do what He says He can do, and, most importantly, that He WILL do it for us! He has the quiet authority to cover all our scars like a winter snow and carry our sins far away. Knowing that He keeps no record of wrongs fills me with an inexpressible joy far greater than any snow day! It’s the kind of joy that makes me want to share the good news and sing the new song God put in my mouth, a song of praise to my gentle Shepherd.

I know you might be tempted to skip this song, but please don’t. Take a few quiet minutes to soak in the lyrics, listen to the soft voice, and reflect on the love Jesus has for you. His voice is unlike any other. Listen when He whispers to your heart, “I love you with an everlasting love.” Live like one who is greatly loved. As The Bible Recap’s Tara-Leigh Cobble always says, “He’s where the joy is.”

Winter Snow by Audrey Asaad and Chris Tomlin

“Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared in radiant splendor before them, lighting up the field with the blazing glory of God, and the shepherds were terrified! But the angel reassured them, saying, ‘Don’t be afraid, for I have come to bring you good news, the most joyous news the world has ever heard! And it is for everyone everywhere! For today in Bethlehem, a rescuer was born for you. He is the Lord Yahweh, the Messiah.’” (Luke 2:9-11 TPT)

Practice Makes Perfect

By Donna Jackson | January 20, 2026 |

In junior high, I started playing the trumpet in the band. I wasn’t very good, but I’m glad I learned to read music. That’s a life skill that’s come in handy. By 10th grade, I turned my attention to art and sports and dropped out of the band. Even though I could toot on a…

Listening To A New Song

By Donna Jackson | January 13, 2026

Just as I hit puberty, a new television show lit up screens across America. My daddy especially enjoyed it. He seemed to connect with all the backwoods humor on a personal level because he had grown up a country boy. Before long, we learned all the characters, their silly skits, and those quirky songs that…

Sing A New Song

By Donna Jackson | January 6, 2026

Ask any musician, sequence matters. If we could take all the notes from the song “Amazing Grace,” put them in a bag, shake them up, and pour them onto a blank sheet of paper, no one would recognize one of the most treasured hymns of all time. That sort of haphazard arrangement seems ridiculous. Yet…

Relient Forever

Who knew those Christmas pencils we handed out to our fifth-graders could inspire so much! For the last three weeks, we’ve learned that to make a mark on the world effectively, wood and graphite must first undergo a process. Similarly, as we become surrendered pencils in God’s hand, He patiently crafts a delightful story. Achieving…

The Great Eraser

By Donna Jackson | December 16, 2025

Ten-year-olds hold a special place in my heart. I guess that’s why I enjoyed teaching fifth graders. My husband often teases that he’s married to a fifth-grader since my sense of humor refuses to grow up. I think he should just be glad I didn’t teach kindergarten. While I love elementary school kids, they have…

Pencils for Christmas: Perfectly Processed

By Donna Jackson | December 9, 2025

If you know me, you know that one of my favorite sayings is, “It’s a process!” Want to make a scrumptious cake, build a fine house, or just tie your shoe? It’s a process. Every process begins with a heartfelt desire for a specific outcome. Then, a methodical series of steps must be planned and…

Pencils for Christmas: Honorable Purpose

By Donna Jackson | December 2, 2025

As Christmastime approached, all of us fifth-grade teachers would order each student a pack of Christmas pencils with their names on them. The kids loved seeing their names on the pencils, and we loved knowing that everyone had one. Having their names on the pencils made it easy to return them to their rightful owner…

Love in Every Language

By Donna Jackson | November 25, 2025

Years ago, Gary Chapman introduced five simple yet powerful love languages: Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Gifts, Physical Touch, and Quality Time. Chapman believed that marriages, parent-child relationships, and friendships often experience disconnection, not because of a lack of love, but because the people involved do not speak the same love language. Many people…

What Women Need: Rest

By Donna Jackson | November 18, 2025

If you live in the South, you know the phrase “dog tired.” It describes how your body feels after a hard day of yard work, garage cleaning, or other activities that make you feel like you’ve run a marathon. Placing one foot in front of the other requires substantial effort. Muscles ache and backs break.…
