If you have children you probably remember the day you brought your baby home. Your psyche got bombarded with questions like, What do I do now? What if he/she eats too much or not enough? How do I get him/her to sleep through the night? Whispers of doubt caused you to believe you weren’t as prepared as you thought.
Believe it or not, similar doubts ring in my ears whenever I birth a new book. Did I write something that glorifies God and not me? Will I be able to do all it takes to share the message I believe God put in my heart? I’ve been so excited about the birth of Everyday Heroes that Satan turned up the volume on the doubt station. But God … God arranged a divine appointment to calm my anxious heart enough to confirm the power of heroic storytelling.
Last week I stopped at LifeWay to pick up a book for my husband. He must have suffered a lapse in good judgement because he knows sending me into a bookstore automatically shrinks the bank account. With his book in hand, I perused the Max, Beth, and Lysa books. (Just looking mind you. :))
That’s when he spoke up. “You ever read that book right there?” the older gentleman said, pointing to a book on the bottom shelf behind me. Realizing he was talking to me I turned around, looked where he pointed, and said, “No, sir. I don’t believe I have.” He went on to tell me how good it was and that he and his wife both loved it. It didn’t take long for me to realize how much he loved telling others about Jesus. He told me he had made his living as a letter carrier for many years. He got to know the people on his route so well that many of them often met him at the mailbox just for a quick chat. He said many times they would wait for him because their lives were troubled. They’d share their trouble and ask him for advice. He always responded with, “I’m not sure what you should do, but I know who does. Let me tell you about my Jesus.” At that point a big ol’ smile stretched across his face and he humbly went on to say, “Now, I’m not telling you this because of anything I did. It was all Him! He did it all! As a letter carrier I introduced 154 people to Jesus.”
He told me about agreeing to be a part-time pastor for a dying church with only eight people – and he and his wife were two of them. They worked with that church for six years gaining 150 more believers.
He got me with his comment that he and his wife were newly-weds. He’s in his 70’s so I said, “Aw, how sweet!” His eyes twinkled with mischief as he grinned and said they’d been married over fifty years, but he still felt like a newly-wed. Now, that was sweet!
This master story-teller kept my attention for about twenty or thirty minutes telling me a couple more amazing stories I’ll share with you another day. However, the most touching moment came after he asked me about my life. I told him about my new book coming out and the doubts that always accompany finishing a project like that. That’s when he asked if he could pray with me. I’ve had people pray with me, for me, and over me – but nothing like this. With this hand on my shoulder, we stood right there in the middle of LifeWay oblivious to anyone else. It was as if Jesus had personally sent His representative to encourage me by praying for the very same things I’d prayed myself for weeks. God had heard my prayers and sent a 70-year-old Jesus to LifeWay with a personal message of comfort. I’ve been inspired by his courage to share his God-stories with literally everyone he meets. His willingness to follow the Spirit’s lead provided in-the-flesh evidence that sharing our stories allows us to become everyday heroes in the lives of those who’ve not yet met Jesus, and even to those who know Him well.
If becoming an everyday hero for Jesus appeals to you, then Everyday Heroes: Old, New, and Even You just might be the tool you need to help open the lines of communication. (Please consider ordering your copy today. Just click the ‘add to cart’ button on the sidebar to make your purchase.) I’m so excited about the possibilities of generations of women coming together to share how God works in their lives to produce amazing results. This Everyday Heroes Bible study encourages mature believers, those new in the faith, and offers teaching to those testing the waters of faith. This is going to be so much fun.
Thank you, God, for sending Mr. Lawson to LifeWay at just the right time on just the right day. The way You take care of me inspires me to tell others!
