Back in our college days, my husband was a big Bob Dylan fan. If you’re old enough (or just a Dylan fan) you may remember a song I used to hear in our first little mobile home just off campus. I couldn’t help but hear it echo in my head as I started to write this section. Now, get your nasally voice ready and sing along:
You’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody,
It may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody.
Luke 4:18 tells us that Jesus came to proclaim good news to the poor, to proclaim freedom for the prisoners, recover the sight of the blind, and to set the oppressed free.
Luke 5:32 says He came to call sinners to repentance.
In Luke 19:10 we read, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
And then in Mark 10:45 we are told Jesus didn’t come to be served, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many.
If we are to follow in Jesus’ steps then those are the things we must also do. Those are big shoes to fill, but I can think of no better gift than freedom in Christ.
Grandma, are you telling your God stories to your children and grandchildren? Not just Bible stories, but stories of how you’ve seen God do wondrous things throughout your life. Do they know the affection you have for Jesus? They need to see your hope and inspiration to help set them on their own freedom journey.
Mothers, are you showing your children what a godly mother should be? Your sons will pick wives based on your example. These women will raise your grandchildren! Live wisely. Are your daughters learning how to love their husbands, and how to smile through difficult days? Are you giving your adult children room to grow?
Young women, do you have a passion for Jesus that inspires the older women in your life? Are they taking comfort in knowing you will someday be the hub of the extended family? Take time for Bible study and prayer now. We are all counting on you.
Ladies, no matter our age, our job in the kingdom is enormous, and we need each other. Together, let’s keep looking into the perfect law that offers freedom, and serve one another in love, as we try to count all our many blessings.
