What’s your mood today? Happy? Content? Frustrated? Sad? If life is going your way you probably feel pretty good. The sun is shining in your world and your face wears a big ‘ol grin. You take deep breaths, point your smiling face to the sky and fling your arms out wide.
Some of you, however, may be feeling those same old stormy winds blowing around you. Your eyes are downcast. Your breathing is shallow. You want to express joy, but you feel afraid, lonely or depressed. Maybe you’ve fought the same battles for so long that you’re just plain worn out. Or, perhaps, it’s the busyness of the season stealing a bit more of your joy every day.
For the next few minutes, no matter what your mood or circumstance, sit back.
(No, really! Sit back, relax and breathe deeply.)
Inhale what Jesus is saying:
“I will talk to the Father, and he’ll provide you another Friend so that you will always have someone with you. This Friend is the Spirit of Truth. The godless world can’t take him in because it doesn’t have eyes to see him, doesn’t know what to look for. But you know him already because he has been staying with you, and will even be in you! I will not leave you orphaned. I’m coming back. In just a little while the world will no longer see me, but you’re going to see me because I am alive and you’re about to come alive. At that moment you will know absolutely that I’m in my Father, and you’re in me, and I’m in you.” (John 14:16-20, The Message)
“I’ve named you friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father. You didn’t choose me, remember; I chose you, and put you in the world to bear fruit, fruit that won’t spoil. As fruit bearers, whatever you ask the Father in relation to me, he gives you. But remember the root command: Love one another.” (John 15:15-17, The Message)
If you have put your faith in Jesus, you get to live with Him forever! That’s a promise that should put a spring in your step and turn up the corners of your mouth. His Spirit lives inside you right this minute, providing an everlasting friendship which sustains you in troubled times and magnifies your enthusiasm in the good times. This Spirit allows others to view your joy in the midst of trouble as a display of God’s mighty hand upon you. As you learn from your troubles, others learn from you. On your good days, this Spirit within you encourages others with a glimpse of the joy of heaven.
Now, before you burst, exhale what Jesus just said to you and let others breathe your refreshing air.
Fling your arms out wide.
Point your smiling face to the sky and say a great big, “THANK YOU!”
