I’m convinced what women lack in brawn, they make up for in resourcefulness. There is no better example of this than the little grey and white killdeer. Mama killdeer birds can put on quite a show in order to lure you away from their nests. They’ll squawk, pretend to be hurt, and flap their wings just so you’ll lose interest in locating their unborn babies. What tickles me about this is that killdeer eggs are almost impossible to see unless you are really looking for them.
A mama bird has been fussing at me every morning at the farm as I begin my walk, so I knew there must be a nest nearby. I looked intently for several mornings and finally located them in plain sight in the gravel next to the driveway. The three small grey and white speckled eggs blend in so perfectly with the gravel that it’s hard to tell where the rocks end and the eggs begin. There is nothing about them that screams, “Hey, I’m different! I’m no ordinary rock! ”
I wonder if God doesn’t occasionally search intently for me only to discover I have blended in perfectly with my surroundings. I’m not so sure there is anything that helps me stand out in a crowd. I wonder, “Do I do or say anything that sets me apart from the rest of the world? Am I content to let the world decide how I care for my body, how I spend my money and how I use my time?”
In 2 Corinthians 6, Paul says, “Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord. Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you. And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” When we become Christians our lives should scream, “Hey, I’m different! I’m no longer ordinary!” We should be brightly colored against a dark and dreary world. Jesus made sure we had the opportunity to house the power of the Holy Spirit ensuring our extraordinary status. Our lives should exhibit the fruit of that Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control.
Are people asking you the reason for the hope within you?
Do others marvel at the peace you have in the midst of great trial?
Is your joy contagious?
Do you find yourself answering the “why don’t you?” questions:
Why don’t you drink?
Why don’t you divorce him?
Why don’t you skip church?
Why don’t you go ahead and buy it?
Why don’t you give her a piece of your mind?
And my favorite – why don’t you just eat whatever you want?
When love is our motivation it changes everything. It makes us want to dedicate our lives to God. Love wraps around every edge of our lives making sure each one glows with definition. Complete surrender lovingly allows everyone to see the reason for the hope that lives within us. When we humbly choose to come out and be separate, the world will notice and we won’t have to squawk, pretend or flap our wings.
