Jesus – The One and Only

So, tell me about your spiritual life.

That’s the statement I always direct toward a new inmate at the city jail during our Thursday morning Bible studies. You can learn a great deal about a person by how they respond. I can’t think of one time when a lady didn’t begin by telling me whether or not she went to church, where she went or how long it had been since she had been to church. It seems that going to church is what most people consider being spiritual.

It blows their minds when I say, “No, don’t tell me about your church experience; tell me how you feel about Jesus.” Usually, there is a great pause … and I purposely let it linger. I can see their minds trying to connect with their hearts to figure out what it is they truly feel about Jesus. To discover that, is to make Him personal. I believe this is the best part of my time with them.

I had much rather introduce someone to Jesus before I introduce them to my church family. I LOVE my church family, but we are all human and at some point we will disappoint them – Jesus never will! It’s much easier to invite them to church hoping someone there will fill them in on God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit instead of me sharing my own heart. If I want to become more like Jesus and be able to share Him with others, I need to get to know Him better every day, spend time with Him and remember who He is.

He is my Creator. He joined God and the Holy Spirit to form me in my mother’s womb. He was there when the world was created and all things were put under His control.

He is my Savior. He was tortured and killed for MY sins. He loved me, pursued me and redeemed me. His resurrection gives me a reason to live.

He is my big Brother. We are both children of the God who meets our every need. Jesus walks the path in front of me, showing me the things to avoid and the things to enjoy. He sticks up for me and loves telling God how He’s seen me grow. He puts me in good standing with our Father.

He is my Friend. He’s the one I can talk to when I’m mad, sad or glad. He listens intently to all of it, then keeps what’s important and blows the rest away. He takes morning walks with me, sits across from me at lunch and answers a thousand questions during the day. He knows me inside and out and loves me anyway. Whichever road His Spirit sends me down, He goes with me. The more I get to know Him, the more I love Him.

He is meek, humble, loving and forgiving. He knows it’s not easy to walk in our shoes. He knows we are not perfect, so He helps us with that. He is the one and only!

There is a new song by Adele that I have grown to love. It’s called “One and Only”. I just listened to it again and imagined it to be  a conversation between Jesus and me. It suddenly  took on a whole new meaning. I’d like you to listen and imagine you and Jesus talking back and forth.

One and Only by Adele (Click here to listen. Words below.)

(Jesus) You’ve been on my mind, I grow fonder every day
Lose myself in time just thinking of your face
(me) God only knows why it’s taken me so long to let my doubts go
You’re the only one that I want

I don’t know why I’m scared, I’ve been here before
Every feeling, every word, I’ve imagined it all
(Jesus) You’ll never know if you never try
To forgive your past and simply be mine

I dare you to let me be your, your one and only
Promise I’m worthy to hold in your arms
So come on and give me the chance
To prove that  I’m the one who can walk that mile
Until the end starts

(me) If I’ve been on your mind, you hang on every word I say
Lose yourself in time at the mention of my name
Will I ever know how it feels to hold you close
And have you tell me whichever road I choose you’ll go

I don’t know why I’m scared ’cause I’ve been here before
Every feeling, every word, I’ve imagined it all
(Jesus) You’ll never know if you never try
To forgive your past and simply be mine

I dare you to let me be your, your one and only
Promise I’m worthy to hold in your arms
So come on and give me the chance
To prove that I’m the one who can walk that mile
Until the end starts

(Jesus)I know it ain’t easy giving up your heart
(Jesus) I know it ain’t easy giving up your heart

(me) Nobody’s perfect
(I know it ain’t easy giving up your heart)
(me) Trust me, I’ve learned it
(me) Nobody’s perfect
(I know it ain’t easy giving up your heart)
(me) Trust me, I’ve learned it

(me) Nobody’s perfect
(I know it ain’t easy giving up your heart)
(me) Trust me, I’ve learned it
(me) Nobody’s perfect
(I know it ain’t easy giving up your heart)
(me) Trust me I’ve learned it

(Jesus) So I dare you to let me be your, your one and only
I promise I’m worthy to hold in your arms
So come on and give me the chance
To prove that I’m the one who can walk that mile
Until the end starts

Come on and give me the chance
To prove that I’m the one who can walk that mile
Until the end starts

So, tell me about your spiritual life.
